Summary
HMSC's 9th Anniversary was commemorated with a picnic at Yurigahara Park on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. with the last people leaving around 3:30 p.m. It was a memorable event made possible by the planning and work of Co-Chairs Cindy Edwards and Peggy Shibuya in coordination with the HMSC Program Committee members.

In spite of the predicated weather reports of rain, thunder and lightening at noon, more than 20 gathered to celebrate the 9th anniversary, enjoy the beautiful park, and renew friendships face to face.

Michi Goto went to the park early to save the Picnic Shelter area meeting place. Everyone gathered there until the weather turned to threats of thunder and lightening and park staff asked us to move to the conservatory for safety. There some enjoyed seeing the three rooms of flowers and plants while others used the time to socialize.

After the weather cleared, everyone returned to the Picnic Shelter to start off the celebration. Ms. Otake from the SICPF gave a greeting. HMSC is grateful to the SICPF and staff for their continued support!

We continued with more socialization plus, a park volunteer explained many aspects about the park in Japanese with Michi Goto doing a wonderful job translating his presentation into English without any advance knowledge of the material. After lunch, some enjoyed a guided tour of the park on the Lily train.

Cindy prepared a quiz game with prizes which got players who were divided into two teams to put on their thinking caps. Non players sat at a separate table and discussed various topics.

Those who were not able to attend can enjoy the many photos taken by Jess King, photo club leader which will be put on our website for all to enjoy. The anniversary was concluded with everyone joining in singing "Happy Birthday HMSC" with the candle-lit homemade vegan cake baked by Cindy.
